Task 1.1: Thinking about listening

(30 minutes)

  • What types of listening texts do your students listen to in English in the classroom?
  • What types of listening texts do your students listen to outside the classroom? In English? In Italian?
  • What are the differences between listening and reading?
  • How should this affect our choice of listening text in the classroom?
  • What procedure do you usually use when you give a listening skills lesson?
  • Read the following articles and compare you ideas:




  • Now choose one of your classes and adapt the example of the listening habits questionnaire so that it is relevant to your learners. Ask your students to complete the questionnaire in class or for homework and then collect in their papers. Look at the results and think about what kinds of listening you could do in class that would motivate and interest your learners.
